Matthew Reno Quade, 36, pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court on Wednesday to one felony count of second-degree drunk driving in connection with the traffic stop of the May 10 at Cottage Grove. In exchange for the guilty plea, Judge Douglas Meslow dismissed a charge of child endangerment and a charge of DWI-two aggravating factors.

Meslow gave Quade a year in Washington County Jail, but later suspended that sentence and ordered him to complete 30 days in a sentencing program. He was also placed on supervised probation for years with conditions – no alcohol use, random testing and the completion of a chemical dependency evaluation.

Cottage Grove police arrested Quade near the northern U.S. 61 exit ramp at 80th Street just after 5 p.m. after witnessing him veering out of his lane, following cars too closely and nearly causing crashes by the rear, according to the charges.

Quade smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and bright, watery eyes, according to the charges. Her 2-year-old daughter was the only passenger in the car, police said. Bottles of Phillips, Smirnoff and Taaka vodka were found in the car.

After field sobriety tests, Quade was taken to the Washington County Jail for suspected drunk driving. He consented to a breath test, which showed a blood alcohol level of 0.38, according to the charges. The legal limit for driving in Minnesota is 0.08.

In October 2005, Quade was arrested by University of Minnesota police on suspicion of DWI. Less than a month later, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DWI charge and was sentenced to two years probation, according to court records.

Calls made to Quade and his attorney on Friday for comment were not immediately returned.
