Cottage units engaged in jaggery making in Tamil Nadu urged the state government to give preference to their products while sourcing the jaggery required for distribution along with other Pongal gift items.
While thanking the state government for conceding their demand to replace sgar with jaggery in the list of Pongal gift items, they said local sourcing of jaggery would be of immense help to cottage industries. .
This would help reduce the costs of transporting the jaggery as part of the centralized supply and subsequent movement to districts, they said. Stating that farmers in several districts operate jaggery-making units, progressive farmer G. Srinivasan from Ganapathi Agraharam said that at present 30,000-50,000 bags of jaggery are produced in the state. and one kg of jaggery is purchased at a price of 30 from the producers.
Although the selling price was not encouraging, he said that if the state government proposed to source the jaggery from local producers to meet the demand for 5 lakh bags (30 kg each) required to meet to the distribution of Pongal gifts, it would be of immense help to the cottage industries. It was disheartening to note that the jaggery had been offered to source from other state-owned manufacturers / traders, he added.
