Firefighters rush to thatched cottage fire in CALBOURNE – Island Echo

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue fire crews respond this evening (Sunday) to a thatched cottage fire in Calbourne.

Several appliances from several island stations make way for Elm Lane, where there are fears that a thatched-roof cottage may be lit.

The characterful stone cottage is located approximately 100 meters from the junction with the middle road.

Elm Lane has been blocked by fire apparatus in both directions, meaning motorists must deviate locally.

UPDATE @ 19:45 – At least 3 fire apparatuses are now on site as well as a water carrier from Freshwater and an Areal ladder platform from Ryde which is en route.

Fire hydrants are used in the area which can lead to reduced water pressure or water discoloration for residents.

The crews use main jets and reels to extinguish the flames.

The roof of the cottage is now removed by firefighters to help prevent the spread of the fire.

Firefighters use a 13.5m ladder to reach the ridge of the roof to facilitate thatch removal and cushion hot spots.

A paramedic arrived at the scene with a few firefighters.
