Extraordinary getaways: Downton Abbey star Sue Johnston wants to move into a cottage on the Lizard Peninsula

Sue Johnston of Downton Abbey said a cozy fisherman’s cottage in a small Cornish village was “meant to be hers”.

Tonight’s episode of Great Escapes on Channel 4 saw her and Sandi Toksvig walking through Trelowarren Forest in the small village of St Martin on the Lizard Peninsula.

They finally reached the rustic, fairy-tale cottage where they spent the night.

The former Great British Bake Off host explained: “So what happened was in 1987 the estate was inherited by the boy, the son and the two daughters got two cottages each .

“The cottages were in such a state of disrepair that they each had to sell a cottage to redevelop the others, but that meant that, very unusually, a cottage came up for sale.”

She continued, “I’m taking you to a gingerbread house in the woods.”

Sue immediately fell in love with the house and said she knew the house was meant to be hers: “Oh my lord, it’s perfect. It’s ready for me. Oh I love it so much, it’s is just heaven. This is my home.

“We were talking recently about how houses speak to you and when you walk in you know it’s your house, it’s supposed to be yours. Well, I’m sorry but that’s meant for me.”

To which Sandi jokingly replied, “I think they thought we were only staying one night” and added that it’s “going to be awkward” trying to get Sue out of the house.

The cozy cottage in the woods is owned by a retired Cornish fisherman and has four bedrooms with stunning log fires and wooden beams.

Sue said it reminded her of a house she grew up in when she was younger, adding that the furniture brought back memories.

It seemed people on Twitter were also loving the rustic cabin, with one person commenting: ‘#Extraordinary Escapes #Cornwall’s second home brought me to tears.’

While someone else said of the house, “Now you speak!! #Extraordinary Escapes.”
